MyMedical was retired. How to move your medical records
For years, MyMedical was where many families kept their medical history: visits, medications, lab results, scanned reports. The app has been retired, and with it went updates, fixes and support. Your records are still in your MyMedical file, though, and you can move all of them to an app that is maintained.
This guide shows how to move them to Historia Medica, a Mac app built as MyMedical's successor. Like MyMedical, it keeps everything on your own computer.
What you need
- Your MyMedical data. Any of these works: the
.mymedicaldocument from your Mac; a MyMedical archive (.mymedicalarchive), made with Create an Archive in MyMedical; or a.cpgzfile, which Mac's Archive Utility sometimes makes when you double-click an archive (that's fine, don't delete it). - A Mac with macOS 12 Monterey or later (Apple silicon or Intel).
- Historia Medica, free during the public beta: download it here.
Make a copy of your MyMedical file first and keep it somewhere safe. Historia Medica only reads the file and never changes it, but a spare copy of your medical history is always a good idea.
Step by step
- Copy your MyMedical data to your Mac, for example into your Documents folder.
- Open Historia Medica. On the welcome screen, choose Import from MyMedical.
- Select your MyMedical file (or the folder that contains it). Historia Medica unpacks archives and finds the database inside for you.
- Review the summary of the people and records found, then click Import.
That's it. Every family member in your MyMedical file becomes a patient in Historia Medica, with their records.
What comes across
- Visits, diagnoses, surgeries, hospital stays, allergies, immunizations and family history.
- Medications and prescriptions, merged into one list with current medications first.
- Tests with every result value. Lab results also become charts (blood test panels, HbA1c, blood pressure and glucose) so you can see trends over time.
- Physicians, pharmacies and other contacts.
- Attachments. If the original files are next to the MyMedical database, they're copied. Otherwise you get the thumbnail, marked "Thumbnail only".
Already started typing your records again?
You don't have to choose. Choose File → Import from MyMedical… and click Preview changes:
- For people already in Historia Medica, the import fills in only missing details and never overwrites what you entered.
- For people who aren't there yet, click Import as new records… to add them next to what you have.
A backup of your database is saved before anything changes, and running the import twice never creates duplicates.
Why your records stay private
Historia Medica has no account and no cloud. Your records live in a single file on your Mac, and the app contains no analytics or tracking of any kind. You back it up the way you back up any other file.
Questions or problems
If your MyMedical file doesn't import, report it here. Describe the file you have (Mac document, archive, or .cpgz), and we'll help. The full instructions are in the User's Guide.
